Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
