The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
