Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
