No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
